Discover Bordeaux’s Family-Run Estates

Explore the heart and soul of Bordeaux through its family-owned wineries. Centuries of tradition meet modern sustainability and heartfelt hospitality. These estates offer more than wine; they offer a story rooted in legacy and respect for the land.

Why Family Matters

  • Living heritage & personal legacy : family estates in Bordeaux, passed down through generations, are curated with deep pride. Many are part of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini, showcasing their dedication to preserving family ownership amid industry consolidation.
  • Authentic hospitality : these estates welcome visitors with warmth, sharing stories in every vine and vintage, a contrast to the anonymity of industrial wineries.
  • Local terroir & community : many families are deeply rooted in their land. Emphasizing authenticity and close bonds with their region. Nicolas Roche noted in PFV gatherings that these families value innovation and sustainable practices.

Meet a Bordeaux Winemaking Family

  • Château Jouvente (Graves) is run by Benjamin Gutmann since 2016 with his family, this small (8.7 ha) estate is officially classified as sustainable. It emphasizes wine tourism and the preservation of their knowledge.
  • Ponty Vineyards (Canon-Fronsac). The Ponty family has nurtured their estate for five generations. They hand-pick grapes, vinify by parcel, and embrace sustainable farming—producing expressive reds while living onsite.
  • Château Cantenac Brown (Margaux) is a historic, family-owned Grand Cru Classé estate. Now overseen by the Le Lous family alongside manager José Sanfins. They blend tradition with innovation. Building a raw earth, gravity-flow winery designed by Philippe Madec, and expanding biodiversity with wildflower hedges and apiaries.

Sustainable Practices & Guest Experience

  • Eco-conscious certifications : a rising number of Bordeaux estates are earning organic, biodynamic, and high environmental value (HVE) labels.
