Epiphany : the feast of kings and the galette

Every year on January 6th, or the first Sunday of January, French families celebrate Epiphany. This religious holiday commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to baby Jesus, but it has also become a beloved family tradition centered around the Galette des Rois.

The origin of Epiphany

The word “Epiphany” comes from Greek and means “appearance”. In the Christian tradition, the holiday honors the arrival of the three Wise Men Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, who brought gifts to baby Jesus.

Over time, Epiphany has become popular as a family celebration, not just for its religious significance.

The Galette des Rois

The most famous symbol of Epiphany is the Galette des Rois. There are two main types :

Frangipane galette : made with puff pastry and almond cream, very popular in northern France ;

King’s brioche : a soft brioche, often decorated with candied fruits, more common in southern France.

A fève (small charm) is hidden inside the galette. Whoever finds it becomes king or queen for the day and wears a paper crown.

Epiphany is mainly a time to share with family and friends. People gather, cut the galette, and everyone hopes to find the fève. It’s a joyful and tasty moment that extends the festive spirit of the holiday season.

Which wine goes with the Galette?

A classic sweet white wine
A slightly sweet wine pairs perfectly with frangipane. It adds sweetness without overpowering the dessert. In Bordeaux, a young Sauternes or a sweet white wine from Entre-Deux-Mers works very well, especially if it’s fresh and balanced.

Crémant or Champagne, for a festive touch
Bubbles bring freshness and cut through the richness of the galette. Perfect for a convivial moment, especially during a brunch or afternoon snack.

A dry but aromatic white, for a twist
A nice dry white with roundness and notes of almond or white fruits can also be a delightful surprise. Best if it’s not too sharp, to stay harmonious with the dessert.

Fun traditions

The youngest under the table : often, the youngest family member sits under the table to assign the slices of galette ;

The crown : whoever finds the fève becomes king or queen and can choose a partner for the day.

Epiphany is a simple but charming celebration that combines tradition, delicious food, and shared moments. Between the galette, the crown, and the fève, it’s a wonderful way to start the new year with family or friends.
