3 Facts About Saint-Émilion You Should Know Before Your Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Saint-Émilion, you’re in for a treat. This charming medieval village is as rich in history as it is in wine. Whether you’re coming for the cobbled streets, the amazing Merlot-based blends, or the jaw-dropping underground monuments…Saint-Émilion will steal your heart.

Before you go, here are 3 fascinating facts that will help you appreciate the magic of this UNESCO-listed gem even more.

1. Saint-Émilion Is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—for Both Its Village and Its Vineyards

Yes, you read that right! Saint-Émilion was the first wine region in the world to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, not just for the beauty of its village, but also for its historic vineyard landscape.

What makes it so special? The vineyards around Saint-Émilion have been cultivated since Roman times. The layout of the land, châteaux, and villages hasn’t changed much in centuries.

2. There’s an Entire Underground Church Hidden Beneath the Village

One of Saint-Émilion’s most jaw-dropping secrets is its Monolithic Church, a massive church carved entirely out of limestone rock beneath the village.

Yes, it’s underground. And yes, it’s huge! Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it’s the largest underground church in Europe. The name “monolithic” means “made from a single stone”, and this one was dug straight out of the cliffside.

The tour includes catacombs, an old hermitage where Saint Émilion himself lived, and some truly beautiful carvings.

Local legend: Saint Émilion was a monk from Brittany who settled here in the 8th century. He would have lived in a small cave (which you’ll also visit on the tour!). He gave the village its name and its spiritual soul.

3. Saint-Émilion Is a Wine Lover’s Paradise—Especially If You Love Merlot

Saint-Émilion wines are some of the most prestigious and age-worthy reds in the world. The star grape here? Merlot—soft, round, and full of ripe red fruit flavors. It’s often blended with Cabernet Franc for structure and spice.

The region is home to famous classified growths like Château Cheval Blanc, Château Angélus, and Château Ausone. There are also dozens of small, family-run estates that offer intimate tastings and warm welcomes.

Whether you’re a wine expert or just getting started, there’s no better place to taste, learn, and fall in love with Bordeaux wines.
